It’s an instrumentation term. A flat response means the same output every time, whatever the input. That’s the standard the lab builds to, and it’s why it’s called what it’s called.
Flatline Dynamics is a founder-led hardware lab in Bristol. It designs, builds and tests field equipment end to end: carry systems, head-worn systems, the electronics and firmware inside them, and the documentation you get with them.
If you work a long way from help, this is built for you. Mountain and expedition teams, marine and offshore crews, search and rescue, field research, survey and inspection work, defence. Different jobs, one shared problem: when something breaks out there, you fix it yourself or you go without.
WHO BUILDS ITONE ENGINEER
Every drawing has the same initials in both boxes.
I have a degree in aerospace engineering and I’ve spent my career in maritime engineering. Two fields where a part that fails doesn’t get a second chance, and where you’re expected to show your working.
Away from work I dive, fly gliders and spend time in the hills. All three teach the same lesson from different angles. A regulator seizes if you don’t service it. A glider has no engine to fall back on when the air stops working. The weather in the hills doesn’t care what the forecast said. Kit either holds up when it’s cold, wet and late, or it lets you down at the worst possible moment.
I build the first kind, and you get it documented in full and honest about what it actually does.
THE RULESWRITTEN DOWN
Four rules, written down before the first part was cut.
Every programme is built to these, whatever it is and whenever it starts. They only matter on the days they cost something, and they do: when a published target is missed, the correction and the reason go on the lab page and stay there.
Where classification allows, a programme is published in full, so you can modify and repair it yourself. Where it doesn’t, the documentation still ships with the product and the limit is stated.
Programme data is held on encrypted, access-controlled systems with multi-factor authentication and current patching, and export control classification is assessed before anything is published or shared.
